Nobody sets out to release a track that sounds thin next to everything else on the playlist. But it happens constantly, and the decision that usually causes it gets made in about ten seconds, late at night, when someone thinks “this’ll do”.

Should I master my own music? The honest answer is that it depends on the release, not on your ability. The DIY vs professional question is a budget and stakes question, not a talent one, and I’ll show you how to tell which situation you’re in.

I’m not a mastering engineer. I’m the person who sees what turns up at CD Unity when the audio is finished, and after fifteen years of that you learn to spot the difference from the first ten seconds of a disc. The masters that cause problems are almost never from artists who lack talent. They’re from artists who made the wrong call about which route to take for that particular release.

Quick definitions, because these get tangled constantly. Mixing is balancing the individual parts within your song: the vocal against the guitars, the kick against the bass. Mastering is what happens to that finished stereo file afterwards. Mixing and mastering are two separate jobs, and mastering is the final step before your music goes anywhere.

The mastering process does three things. It sets the overall tonal balance so the track sounds right rather than boxy or harsh, which is where most of the music production value sits. It controls loudness so your song sits sensibly next to commercial tracks. And it makes the record translate, meaning it holds together on a phone speaker, in a car, on cheap earbuds and on a proper set of monitors.

Translation is the real job. One set of decisions that has to work on every system going.

That last one is the bit people underestimate. The process of mastering isn’t about making things louder. It’s about making one specific set of decisions work across every playback system your listener might own.

Let me be straight with you: there are plenty of situations where the DIY route is the right call, and anyone telling you otherwise is usually selling something.

Master it yourself when the release is low-stakes. A rough demo for a promoter, a track you’re sending to three collaborators, a social media clip, a scratch version so the band can hear where the album is heading. Nobody is judging a rough file you emailed to a venue on a Tuesday.

Master it yourself when you’re learning. Choosing to learn mastering in your own home studio teaches you an enormous amount about how your mixes actually behave, and that knowledge feeds straight back into better mixes. Every hour you spend on it deepens your understanding of what you’re hearing. That’s worth real money over a career, even if the first twenty attempts are rough.

And it’s worth saying that in some corners of electronic music, self-mastering is completely normal. Producers who’ve spent years inside one DAW often have the listening skills and the workflow to get there themselves, and the level of control appeals.

What you need as a minimum: a listening environment you know well, one pair of headphones you trust completely, a limiter, and two or three reference tracks in the same genre. That’s it. You do not need to buy more mastering plugins.

When to hire a mastering engineer instead

Now the other side. There are releases where hiring a pro isn’t a luxury, and I see the evidence of this every week.

Hire a professional engineer when it’s a commercial release. If you’re pressing physical copies, pitching to radio, or putting real money behind a launch, the mastering is the cheapest part of the budget and the one that touches everything else. A £300 CD run with a weak master is £300 wasted.

Hire a professional when you mixed it yourself. This is the big one. After forty hours inside a mix, you cannot hear it any more. Your brain has compensated for every problem in it. A professional mastering engineer brings a fresh set of ears and, more importantly, an unbiased opinion from someone with no emotional stake in the snare sound you agonised over.

Hire a professional when the record has to compete. If your track is going into a playlist next to major label releases, the level of accuracy required to sit alongside them comfortably isn’t something you’ll hit in a bedroom. That’s not about talent. It’s about a treated room, monitors that tell the truth, and often a professional studio full of analog gear you’re never going to own.

What professional mastering provides, beyond the audio itself, is a set of judgement calls made thousands of times before. An experienced mastering engineer has heard what happens when you push a mix too hard for vinyl. They know what a mix does at 40Hz in a room you can’t hear, and good mastering is mostly those calls.

Cost, honestly: most UK engineers working with independent artists charge between £40 and £120 per track, with album rates often landing between £250 and £600. Against the cost of recording and manufacturing, that’s a small number.

What about AI mastering services?

AI mastering has got substantially better and it’s no longer a joke. LANDR and similar tools will analyse your file and apply a chain in a couple of minutes for a few pounds.

Here’s my honest read. AI mastering is a decent upgrade on doing nothing, and it’s fine for demos, works-in-progress and streaming-only singles where the budget genuinely isn’t there. It’s consistent, it’s fast, and for straightforward material in a well-served genre it’ll get you somewhere respectable.

What it can’t do is make a decision. It doesn’t know that your quiet track is meant to be quiet, or that the distortion in the second chorus is deliberate. It analyses and matches. When your music does something unusual, that’s exactly when an algorithm flattens the thing that made it interesting.

I’d also be cautious about using it for anything heading to a physical format, for reasons I’ll come to.

Common mistakes to avoid when mastering your own music

Six mistakes to avoid, in the order I see them cause problems.

Chasing loudness. This is the most common mistake by a distance. People push the limiter until the meters look impressive and the track arrives squashed flat. Streaming platforms turn everything down to a normalised level anyway, so all you’ve achieved is throwing away your dynamics. Aim somewhere around -14 to -9 LUFS integrated for most material and stop worrying about it.

Mastering the same day you mixed. You have no fresh ears. Leave it 48 hours minimum.

Working entirely on closed-back cans. Fine for detail, terrible for judging what’s happening at the bottom. Check on at least one other system, even a car.

Never using a reference. Use reference tracks. Load two commercial songs you admire in the same genre into your session, level-match them properly, and switch between. It’s the single fastest way to catch a problem.

Level-matched references catch more problems in ten minutes than an hour of guessing.

Mistaking a compression problem for an EQ problem. If something feels lifeless, more EQ rarely helps. It’s usually the dynamics.

Doing it because you think you should. There’s no prize for a fully DIY release. Most professional records are the work of several people, and a split of DIY and professional mastering across a release is completely normal: master the throwaways yourself, pay for the singles.

The bit nobody mentions until it’s too late

Here’s where I actually have something to add, because this is where I sit.

A master for streaming and a master for a physical release are not the same file. When we press a CD, we need the audio at 16-bit 44.1kHz, ideally as a DDP image with the track order, gaps, PQ codes and ISRC data already embedded. Sending a folder of loose MP3s or a set of 24-bit 48kHz WAVs means someone has to convert them, and that someone might not be the person who made the artistic decisions.

Vinyl is stricter still. Excessive high-end and out-of-phase bass cause real physical problems when a lacquer gets cut, so a vinyl master usually needs different treatment from the digital one. A cutting engineer will thank you for a master that wasn’t crushed to within an inch of its life.

This is the one place where I’d push back hard on the DIY route. If you’re going to physical, the format-specific side of mastering services is worth paying for, because the mistakes are expensive and permanent once a thousand discs exist.
