HOW TO GET CD TRACK NAMES TO APPEAR ON PLAYERS
You put your finished album into a car stereo and the screen says Track 01. Then Track 02. Nothing about your band, nothing about the song, just a number where the title should be. It looks amateur, and it isn’t your fault, because nobody explains this properly before you order.
There are two completely separate systems that make titles appear, they work in different places, and most artists have never heard of either. Sort both and your release behaves like a commercial one.
I see this at the pressing plant constantly. Someone gets their discs back, plays one in the car, and emails us slightly panicked. The fix is straightforward, but it has to happen before manufacturing, not after, which is why I want you reading this now rather than in three weeks.

Here’s the thing that trips everyone up. An audio CD, in its original 1980 specification, has no space for words. It stores audio and a table of contents. That’s it. The table of contents lists how many pieces of music are on there and how long each one runs. No names anywhere.
So when a machine shows you a title, it’s doing one of two things.
It’s either reading extra data deliberately written onto the disk during manufacturing, which is called CD-Text. Or it’s measuring the number of tracks and their exact lengths, sending that fingerprint to an online service, and getting names back.
Two mechanisms, two different fixes. Sort out only one and half your audience still sees numbers.
CD-Text is an extension to the original standard, introduced by Sony in the 1990s. It tucks the album title, artist and song titles into the lead-in area, in the space alongside the audio.
The advantage is that it needs no internet connection. A standalone CD player or car head unit reads it straight off the disk and puts the track information on the screen. That’s what’s happening when a commercial release shows its title in a car with no phone connected.
Two catches, and they matter.
First, not every machine supports it. Plenty of budget units ignore the format entirely, and most media players ignore it by default, which is why a copy can show titles in a car and nothing on a laptop.
Second, and this is the important one: it has to be embedded in the master before your CDs are made. It cannot be added afterwards. Once a run is manufactured, those discs are what they are.

The second system works completely differently.
When you insert a disk into a computer or a connected car system, the software reads the table of contents, builds a fingerprint from the number of tracks and their track lengths, and queries an online service for a match. If your record is in there, the titles appear. If it isn’t, you get Audio Track 01.
Gracenote, which grew out of the old CDDB project, is the big one. iTunes uses it, as do Apple Music, many in-car systems and a lot of media players. There are alternatives like MusicBrainz, but the Gracenote database is the one that matters commercially.
The key point: nothing physical controls this. The lookup happens over the internet, against a database your record needs to be registered with. A perfectly manufactured run with the text embedded can still come up blank on a laptop if nobody ever submitted it.
Worth knowing too that Microsoft’s album lookup has become unreliable, and plenty of the confusion I see traces back to someone testing on Windows 11 and assuming their pressing is broken. Try a different program before you panic.

The classic route is the Apple Music app on a Mac, formerly iTunes. Put my CD in and nothing appears, people say, and that’s the starting point: insert it, wait for the app to detect it, and it’ll show up as unknown. Do it once, properly, with the spelling exactly as it appears on your artwork. Whatever you type becomes what everyone sees for years, and correcting a bad entry later is far more annoying than getting it right first time. Worth adding to your release day checklist alongside your ISRC codes.

Most CD burning software can write the data if you tell it to. The setting is usually buried, often labelled CD text or something similar, and it’s off by default. Look through your program’s options before you start rather than after.
Using Windows Media Player is the common stumbling block. It burns fine but won’t write the text, which is exactly why so many people end up with track names not showing on a home-burned copy. Use software that supports the feature instead.
One more thing: an MP3 CD is a completely different animal. That’s a data CD full of files, and each user sees whatever sits in the file tags rather than anything embedded in the lead-in. If your car reads them, tag the files properly and you’ll get names that way instead.

Can I add CD-Text after my discs are manufactured?
No. It’s written into the lead-in during manufacturing, so it’s fixed once the run exists. That’s the single biggest reason to sort it before you order. If you’ve already had a batch made without it, you can still submit to Gracenote, which at least covers computers and connected systems.
Will my titles show on every machine?
No, and it’s worth being realistic. Support varies by manufacturer and by age of the hardware. Older and cheaper units often ignore it. Doing both covers the widest range, but there will always be a stereo somewhere showing numbers.
Do I need this if I’ve got ISRC codes?
They’re separate things. ISRC codes identify each recording for royalty tracking and don’t display anywhere. Track titles are for humans. Both can live in the same DDP, and you want both, but one doesn’t give you the other.
Why does one of my titles show names and another doesn’t?
Almost always because one was mastered with the info embedded and the other wasn’t, or because one got registered with Gracenote and the other was missed. Compare the two masters and you’ll usually spot which.
How long until my submission appears?
Entries typically go live within a few days, though it can take longer. Test on a machine that hasn’t seen it before, since a laptop may have cached the earlier blank result.
